5 Ways for Kids to Have Healthy Teeth and Gums

Making sure your kids have healthy teeth and gums is hard, especially if they are very young.

Why Do Kids Need Special Dental Care?

Kids are more prone to have cavities and are more likely to have gaps between their teeth due to their teeth falling out and the emergence of new ones. So, parents have to pay more attention to the gums and make sure they are clean.

It might be hard, but it's perfectly doable. Here are five ways to make sure your kids will have perfectly healthy teeth and gums:

How to Get Healthy Teeth and Gums for Your Kid?

 Brush + Floss

This is the most important way to make sure your kids’ teeth are healthy. Let the kids develop the habit of brushing their teeth twice a day and flossing at least once. Make sure the toothpaste you choose contains fluoride as it prevents tooth decay and protects the enamel of the teeth.

Regular Checkups

Do not shy away from taking your kids to the dentist. Getting a professional examination and cleanup is the most effective way to ensure your kids’ dental health. Dental experts recommend that children visit their dentist once a year at least. But for kids below age 4, it is recommended to go once every 6 months.

Maintain a Proper Diet

The foods you eat have effects on the health of your teeth. So, pay attention to the food intake of your children. It is better to avoid foods containing sugar, candies, chocolates, and junk food. If they do have them, make sure they rinse and brush their teeth thoroughly after.

Drink Lots of Water

Getting your kids to drink water is hard, we know. But water plays a significant role in oral health. Staying hydrated not only improves your overall health but also makes your teeth stronger.

The US Public Health Service Commission in 1962 recommended the addition of a fluoride compound in community water to prevent dental caries. So make sure your kids are drinking enough fluoridated water.

Get That Sun!

Let the kids be exposed to sunlight for at least 20 to 30 minutes per day. Vitamin D in sunlight helps in the absorption of calcium and phosphate, which keeps the enamel strong.

Follow the above methods and your kids will have healthy teeth and gums for sure!
